Turf Managers' Conference

Date: 22nd January 2018

Green Speed is More Than a Number

This session will discuss data collected on green speed and the dispersion of golf balls as they roll across a putting green. Considering the analysis made of the data is not so much about the exact measurements, or the average of the measurements, but more about the variation in the measurements. What is normal variation if you measure green speed at location X on green 1 and then move to location Y on green 1? Is the speed identical? What if it varies by 7 inches, is that normal, or is that unusual? What is the normal variation in green speed from all 19 or 20 greens at an 18 hole facility? What is abnormal variation? And what is normal dispersion of ball roll across a green? What is abnormal dispersion?

Learning Outcomes:

  • How green speed varies from location to location on the same green
  • How green speed varies from green to green on the same golf course
  • The normal variation in green speed across all the greens on a golf course
  • How a ball is likely to vary from a true course as it rolls across a green
  • Some of the normal values for ball roll distance (green speed) around the world
  • Green speed probably varies more than you thought

Presented by Micah Woods, Chief Scientist, Asian Turfgrass Centre

Lead Better

Spend any time researching leadership and you’ll come up with a dizzying number of definition, many of them mutually contradictory. Rather than get embroiled in all that, this presentation will simply propose a sensible, useful and practical model of leadership that works. It might be called, “What do people who are leaders do that people who aren’t leaders don’t do?”

Jeremy Marchant will justify that model, showing examples of people who have deployed it successfully. Looking at some prominent people who think they are leaders, and explain how they could modify their performance to be better leaders.

Crucially, the session will explain why some people, when they try to use this model, get stuck, and will give plenty of ways to get unstuck.

Learning Outcomes:

  • A useful definition of leadership
  • Using examples, how this works in practice
  • The four things that leaders do that others don’t
  • Four ways to keep going, if you get stuck

Presented by Jeremy Marchant, Specialist in Emotional Intelligence, Jeremy Marchant Limited

A comprehensive, downloadable handout will accompany this session. Jeremy also offers all attendees at the Turf Managers’ Conference telephone support service for up to six months after the Conference.

Reduce Your Organic Matter Problems with Hydration Peroxide!

This session will look at the experiment of mixing hydrogen peroxide with water mixed in irrigation water to address organic matter and soil root diseases on putting greens. Over the past three years this testing has shown some astonishing results and discoveries including the removal of black layer and worm control

Learning Outcomes:

  • Results of organic matter tests and micro-biology populations
  • What could this mean for the future of golf course management?
  • Telling techniques

Presented by David Bataller, Director of Golf, PGA Catalunya

Managing Water for Improved Turf Disease Control

This session will look at managing water effectively to improve turf health and turf cultural practices, thus resulting in an improved disease control programme.

  • The turfgrass disease triangle: host, pathogen, environment
  • Irrigation and turf disease management
  • Methods to monitor volumetric water content
  • Soil surfactants and how they work
  • Using soil surfactants to help manage turf diseases

Presented by Mike Fidanza, Professor of Plant and Soil Sciences, Pennsylvania State University

Stress Awareness

Stress is now the number one cause of work related ill health and absence. This session will consider what is stress? How does it impact us? Where does it come from? How can we recognise it in ourselves and in others? How can we manage the factors that contribute to it?

Learning Outcomes:

  • Understanding why we stress
  • The impact of stress on our bodies
  • Recognising stress in ourselves and others
  • Recognising the root causes of stress in modern society
  • Managing stress in the workplace
  • Enabling wellbeing in the workplace

Seminar 3

Date: 23rd January 2018

The continuing loss of Plant Protection Products has highlighted the need to develop effective methods for minimizing biotic (e.g. disease, insects, nematodes) and abiotic stress (e.g. drought, extreme temperatures) in turf. This objective is made more dificult by climate change and the increasingly high expectations for turf quality within the industry.

Biostimulants represent one of the best options for achieving this, but we require an understanding of the modes of action of these natural materials on plant growth and plant stress. Here we present results that demonstrate how biostimulants can modify plant genes and biochemical pathways to enhance growth.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Potential for managing stress in turf using natural biostimulants
  • How biostimulants modify plant growth

Drought - Doesn't Have to Mean a Brown Course!

Date: 24th January 2018

Drought doesn’t have to be a big issue and your clubs’ operation and customer experience, if planned for and well managed. Threats to golf water security come from many quarters: global warming, lower rainfall, drier summers and drought. Throw in the unpredictable risks of climate change and tighter environmental requirements, without a Drought Management Plan these changes will likely affect your clubs’ business model, customer experience and future growth. The Focus On session offers practical advice on how to identify your clubs’ drought risks and develop options to help you plan for a water poor future.

  • Recognise the threats of golf from current and future drought
  • Identify the early warning hydrological threshold trigger levels for the different stages of a drought i.e. normal, potential drought and drought?
  • Carry out a light touch golf water resources drought audit
  • Understand the difference between a drought order, drought permit and how they affect golf water security
  • Develop a golf drought water management action plan
  • Explain how a good Drought Management Plan underpins UK golf club’s future growth and sustainability

Help choose the winner of the BIGGA Photo Competition 2017

There were an incredible 314 entries for this year’s photographic competition, with BIGGA members sending in their snaps from as far away as Sweden, Switzerland and the United States.

With so many entries being sent in, narrowing the list down to our 20 favourites was a tricky task, and now we need your help to uncover the overall winners.

Click here to view the finalists and select your favourite.

Greenkeeper International guest editor Stuart Green said: “Thank you to everyone who entered their images into this year’s competition.

“Images of hot air balloons floating above golf courses, sand martins at St Andrews, and hole changing in the Swiss Alps, among so many other brilliant and beautiful images, have once again reaffirmed how lucky we are to work in an industry that provides such spectacular views on a daily basis.

“We had an unbelievable amount of entries for the competition this year, and we need your help to decide the winner.”

There are only 12 spots up for grabs in next year’s calendar and there can be only one winner, so we’re handing the power over to you, the BIGGA members.

Click here to view the finalists and select your favourite.

Member voting closes on 20 October 2017 and we will announce the winner in the December of the magazine, when you will receive your BIGGA desktop calendar 2018.

The overall winner of the competition will be presented with a framed print of their picture at the Welcome Celebration. They will also win a GoPro Hero action camera.

With its iconic 17th hole, TPC Sawgrass provides one of the most recognizable settings in golf and will make for an unforgettable experience for the BIGGA members selected to join the programme.

If they’re lucky, the greenkeepers will even get the opportunity to attempt to hit the 17th hole’s famous island green.

Each of the members underwent a rigorous application process, consisting of an online application, submission of a short video and an interview with BIGGA and John Deere representatives.

Looking back at BIGGA National 1987

This year we celebrate 30 years of hosting a national tournament for greenkeepers, and we met up with Mel Guy, the first ever BIGGA National champion.

A national golfing event for the country’s greenkeepers has been held since 1923, but only came under BIGGA’s authority in 1987, when the association came into being. Back then it was known as the News of the World trophy, and the venue was Verulam in St Albans. We’re marking the 30th anniversary of the BIGGA National Championship by returning to Verulam for the 2017 edition of the competition.

A parkland course dating back to 1905, Verulam is steeped in history. The course is known as the home of the Ryder Cup, as it’s where Samuel Ryder was playing his golf when he had the idea of a match between golf professionals from America and Britain.

Another part of Verulam’s great history was written in 1987, when the club hosted BIGGA’s inaugural national championship. The winner was Mel Guy, who was head greenkeeper at South Leeds and was appearing in his first national competition.

“I remember brilliant weather, it was absolutely fantastic,” recalled Mel. “There was no rain, just glorious sunshine.

“I enjoyed the course, from what I can recall of it. It was in perfect condition, but then I would say that, for the simple reason that I walked away the winner.”

The 1987 event was played across 54 holes ??“ the event has subsequently been reduced to 36 ??“ with many of those involved bringing their families along in caravans to enjoy a holiday while the event took place.

“The lads were there for three days of golf,” said Mel. “But it probably wasn’t as intense as it is now, it was a really great social event.”

More than 70 greenkeepers played the course, kept in top condition by head greenkeeper Geoff Smith and his staff.

Using Ping irons and a crookshank head set of woods built by JH Onions, Mel shot 231 over 54 holes.

He said: “I completed the third round and one of the lads came up to me and said it looked like I might have won the 54-hole scratch. I said, ‘you must be joking, not with these scores’.”

Dramatically, Mel finished one shot ahead of Richard Barker of Longcliffe, who missed a six-foot putt on the last green.

He was also a member of the victorious Northern Region team, which claimed victory in the team competition.

Mel was presented with the BIGGA National Championship trophy, the same one golfers will be competing for at this year’s event. It’s a large cup, and Mel said his first thought after being presented with it, was where he would keep it.

“At the time I lived in a single bedroom flat,” he said. “And I’m thinking, that’s huge and expensive. It won’t fit in my flat, and what if I get robbed?”

As it happened, Mel would only have to worry about looking after the trophy for one year, as he left his role at South Leeds to move into sales, meaning he was unable to defend the cup the following year, when the event was held at Ayr Belleisle.

But in 1987, Mel returned to South Leeds to a hero’s welcome. He said: “Shortly after I came back it was presentation night at the club and they insisted that I take it along.

“So I got presented with it again and I had to make a little speech. I said ‘I would like to thank Dennis Sidebottom for allowing me to take time off. When I asked him if I could go to the competition, he told me not to come back empty handed.

“‘Well there you are Dennis, I couldn’t have brought you anything bigger, are you going to fill it?’

“And to his credit, he filled it. He went to the bar and said ‘give us a handful of straws and some serviettes’.”

Mel was club champion nine times at South Leeds, where he played for 53 years, before hanging up his clubs in 2012.

His time at the club could have been much shorter after he was made redundant from his role as an engineer and went to the committee to ask about suspending his membership. Instead, they offered to help him out and asked if he would be interested in working on the course.

When a greenkeeper left, he took on a permanent role. “I had no greenkeeping

qualifications,” Mel said. “Then one day the head greenkeeper left. I was used to organising people on the job and that’s what was needed.

“Being a member at South Leeds, it was also a case of knowing what the members wanted.”

The members at South Leeds were delighted that Mel had been able to bring the prestigious trophy back to the club following his Verulam victory.

He would bring the club further renown his performance at the BIGGA National qualified him for the greenkeeping team entered into the Kubota Challenge at The Belfry.

This annual event saw a team of greenkeepers go up against teams from the Golf Foundation, club secretaries and the English Golf Union, and the BIGGA members were again victorious.

One of the major differences Mel has noticed about the BIGGA National Championship since he took part is the improving standard of golfers taking part. He won the championship while playing off a handicap of six, whereas in 2016, the best ranked player was two-time winner Gordon Sangster, who played off +2.

For that reason, the Challenge Cup was introduced, which takes handicaps into account and is played over 18 holes on the second day of the tournament. It means that everyone who takes part in the event has a chance of winning.

The 30th anniversary of the BIGGA National Championship will be held at Verulam on 2-3 October. If you would like to take part in the event, fill out the application form opposite and return it to Rachael Duffy at BIGGA House.

BIGGA National returns home

Thirty years ago Chris Carpenter MG played in the very first BIGGA National Championship at Verulam.

This year he will welcome the association’s top golfers back to the course for the competition’s 30th anniversary, having taken on the course manager role at Verulam, the ‘Home of the Ryder Cup’, in 2005.

“Back in 1987 the course was set up slightly differently,” he recalled when speaking to GI ahead of this month’s championship. “Back then we started on the 1st and 10th tees, but it is half a mile to the 10th tee and so they were taking them down there in a trailer.”

The BIGGA National used to be a three-day event, although golf was only played on two days.
Chris added: “A lot of people used to make it their week’s holiday.

“I remember getting an 11 on the 11th, which scuppered my chances. I can’t remember how I got that, it must have been awful!”

Chris went on to play in six nationals, and despite never claiming the top prize, he has some fond memories of the events. The most remarkable was at
Lyme Regis in 1989 when fog interrupted play.

“We were on the 10th hole and this fog came through,” Chris recalled. “And that was it for the day. From the 10th tee you couldn’t see the green and when you got to the ball, you couldn’t play on.”

Chris previously worked at Porters Park in nearby Radlett, a club with a long history of its own, dating back to 1899.

He also spent 14 years as head greenkeeper at Brookmans Park in Hatfield, before returning to his home town of St Albans to take up the head role at Verulam.

He was brought in to succeed Geoff Smith, who had been at the club for 30 years and signed off in 2005, the club’s centenary year.

“That was his swansong,” said Chris of Geoff, who passed away in 2010. “He made a really big effort for the centenary and you could see that with a little bit of extra effort, the course could be made into something really special.

“Geoff had been here for 30 years, so the job didn’t come up very often. I was looking for a move closer to home and Verulam is a nice course that needed a little bit of tweaking around the edges. What I thought would be a nice project, 12 years later and we are still upgrading.”

Verulam has a lofty name, taking its cue from the Roman name for St Albans, where it is the city’s only private members club. It also has a prestigious history, laying claim as the birthplace of the Ryder Cup.

Former club pro Abe Mitchell is reputed to be the man immortalised atop the Ryder Cup. He was the personal coach to Samuel Ryder, who first conceived of a match between American and British professionals while a member at Verulam.

With such a prestigious history, the pressure will be on when the BIGGA greenkeepers head to Verulam for the national championship, 30 years after the first competition was held there.

“I won’t say I’m not nervous,” said Chris. “But I’m just loving it. I’m sure we will be twitching two weeks beforehand though.”

Chris also praised BIGGA for the role it has played in his career, and for developing greenkeeper education over the past 30 years.

“I love the job,” he added. “It’s a fantastic lifestyle, helped by the better education and the money is improving. BIGGA has improved greenkeeping standards and we can now speak to golfers and the committee and explain why we are
doing things, or why they shouldn’t do others.

“The structure is also now there for juniors to move up and there’s a real clear career path. To any young greenkeeper I would say take advantage of this opportunity. Go out and see the world and get as much experience as you can.”

At 6,429 yards Verulam is restricted in opportunities to expand due to the compact nature of the 125-acre site, and the boundaries that surround it.

However, this has preserved James Braid’s original vision for the course, making Verulam one of the finest examples of the legendary course architect’s work in the country.

If you are aware of the club’s heritage, which few can rival, then the entranceway is rather understated. The road takes you underneath a railway and you turn left into a cul-de-sac housing a small business park. Ignoring the distractions and heading straight down the drive and you see a brick entranceway welcoming you to Verulam Golf Club, the ‘Home of the Ryder Cup’.

The 125-acre site features 25 acres of woodland, making it a typically compact James Braid design.

Away from the modern clubhouse, at the furthest reaches of the course, across Cottonmill Lane, and you find the location for the original pre-Braid holes. These are built onto a clay subsoil, while the newer holes are built on chalk and flint, making for two very distinct maintenance requirements.

Over the years the club has spent a large amount on irrigation systems.
A further recent development has been the enlistment of architect Kenneth Imrie, who specialises in restoring James Braid designs.

“Apart from the trees, this is a good example of Braid’s work,” said Chris. “The greens are pretty much as he designed them.
But obviously things change and if Braid came back, he probably wouldn’t build the bunkers like he did then. They were very big, with very steep faces, making them very difficult to maintain, and so we have modernised them.”

Some of the oldest parts of the course date all the way back to St Albans’ Roman past, such as the ditch and banking on the 15th hole. Other improvements in recent years have sought to make the course more difficult for the modern golfer.

Chris added: “We have put most of the bunkers back where they were. The design was in the right place, we just tweaked the design for the modern golfer.

“The other defence of the course is small greens, which are sloping and most of them run away from you, which is very much a Braid design. I always keep within the confines of the architect in respect for what he was trying to achieve.”

A James Braid classic, the home of the Ryder Cup, and the location for the first BIGGA National Competition 30 years ago: Verulam has a long and distinguished history.

In October, BIGGA members will write their own chapter in the annals of Verulam.
