Ronan Rafferty joins BIGGA Scotland conference line-up

The BIGGA Scotland Golf Industry Conference is due to take place next month, with a seven-time European Tour winner joining the line-up.

Ronan Rafferty, a former winner of the European Tour Order of Merit and player on the 1989 Ryder Cup team, will be appearing at the conference, to be held at Perth Concert Hall on

27 February.

BIGGA Scotland Chairman Stuart Ferguson MG said: “Ronan is one of the biggest names in golf and we’re looking forward to hearing from his life on tour and his unique perspective on how golf courses have changed throughout his career.

“Alongside a talk by R&A Chief Executive Martin Slumbers and a whole host of other world class speakers, the 2018 Scottish conference is due to be one of the largest and best ever.”

Requirements:

We require motivated, friendly Greenkeepers who are looking for the opportunity to work overseas this year. You must have at least 2 years’ experience in Greenkeeping or Grounds Maintenance.

Due to the location and proximity of accommodation own transport is highly desirable but not essential for these roles. You will need to be able to start from April 2018 and depending on the weather stay until Oct/Nov 2018.

The finalists of the BIGGA Awards 2018 have been revealed

The BIGGA Turf Management Exhibition returns this January, with more than 5,000 turf managers, greenkeepers, golf club owners and industry decision makers expected to head through the doors of the Harrogate Convention Centre.

One of the highlights of the exhibition will be the BIGGA Welcome Celebration sponsored by Textron Golf, where the winners of the prestigious BIGGA Awards will be revealed.

Presented by Naga Munchetty and featuring entertainment from stand-up comedian Ian Moore, the awards recognise the year’s outstanding greenkeeping performances from association members.

Future Turf Managers selected for Ryder Cup experience

Jacobsen and BIGGA have chosen a team of Future Turf Manager Initiative (FTMI) graduates to join the course maintenance team for the 2018 Ryder Cup at Le Golf National in France.

One delegate from each FTMI in the past five years has been selected to volunteer at the event, with one more person due to be chosen from the FTMI class of 2018.

The chosen BIGGA members are:

Jacobsen and BIGGA have worked closely with Alejandro Reyes, Golf Courses and Estates Manager at Le Golf National, to provide this potentially career-defining opportunity for BIGGA members for the very first time.

Next year’s delegates were recently announced, and the 20 BIGGA members selected to take part will attend the three-day event at Jacobsen’s HQ in Ipswich from 6-8 March 2018.

Aimed at up and coming greenkeepers who want to make the leap to Course Manager, FTMI focuses on personal and professional development. The FTMI programme utilises the expertise of leading Course Managers, dynamic trainers and industry experts to mentor and educate the next generation of industry leaders.

In 2018, The Ryder Cup will be held in Continental Europe for only the second time in its history. Le Golf National will be hosting the biennial match on its spectacular L'Albatros course. Alejandro and his team of approximately thirty greenkeepers have completed extensive renovation work in the lead up to hosting the event. Renovation work has included a brand-new drainage system capable of draining 90mm of surface water within three hours on all playable surfaces, fibre optics have been installed for on-course connectivity and many holes have been completely renovated.

Commenting on the unique volunteering opportunity, Director of International Golf Sales at Textron Golf, Andre Andrade, said: “We feel privileged to be able to offer FTMI delegates the experience of volunteering at the Ryder Cup. It is a huge event, and one I am sure they will remember for the rest of their lives. This opportunity is testament to the close working relationship that Jacobsen has with Le Golf National, and we thank the team there for allowing us to make this happen. Jacobsen is very proud to be an official supplier to the 2018 Ryder Cup, and we look forward to taking the lucky FTMI delegates with us to France next year.”

During the Ryder Cup, which takes place between 28-30 September 2018, 180 members of staff, including 140 volunteers, will be manicuring the golf course to ensure that the playing surfaces are in pristine condition for the duration of the matches.

Situated around 20 miles south west of Paris, the spectacular course is one of the best in the world for spectators and is consistently ranked in Europe’s top ten courses. Le Golf National has hosted the French Open every year, except for two years, since 1991.

Construction of a brand new European Golf Design 18 hole course and a 6 hole academy course is underway as the new home of Royal Norwich. At the same time the club will be celebrating it’s 125th anniversary in September at it’s existing course, which remains operational until the new courses are ready to open in 2019.

Growing in of the new courses takes place this summer. The 300 acre mature parkland landscape features magnificent specimen trees and free draining soils.

The new course has been designed by Ross McMurray at European Golf Design. The greens and tees are the first in the UK to be built using Profile, a USGA approved rootzone amendment that offers significant long term growing condition benefits.

The irrigation system being installed features the latest technology to offer efficient operation and optimise water use.

A purpose built greenkeeping facility is under construction and due to be completed in April. This will provide some of the best staff facilities in the industry with a dedicated training room, comfortable rest room, drying facilities, double bay workshop and cutting unit sharpening room.

Leading comedian confirmed to return to BIGGA Welcome Celebration

Ian Moore will be returning to the BIGGA Welcome Celebration sponsored by Textron Golf, where he will join television presenter and event host Naga Munchetty.

Ian occupies a unique position in British comedy. He is a regular on TV and radio, is a best-selling author and a headliner at London’s world-famous Comedy Store.

Ian is a regular on BBC 5Live’s Fighting Talk and BT Sport’s The Football’s On, and a sometime co-host and regular guest on TalkSport’s The Warm Up.

Langley Park Golf Club, in Beckenham, Kent are looking for a Course Manager to lead their team of dedicated greens staff and enhance the reputation and status of both the golf course and the club itself. The successful candidate will be confident and knowledgeable about the game, and be able to build relationships and lines of communication with staff, members and Club management.

The Role

The Course Manager will, amongst other things:

• Be entrusted with the daily maintenance, operations and management of the golf course in accordance with Club Policies
• Possess a wealth of technical greenkeeping and agronomy skills together with impeccable standards of course preparation and a keen eye for presentation and detail
• Manage financial resources including control of budgets

Experience

Your experience should be commensurate with the role, however the following are considered essential:

• A minimum of 5 years Course Manager experience
• A minimum of 10 years greenkeeping experience
• Professional qualifications suitable for this senior position, NVQ Level 4 or equivalent, including spraying and chainsaw certificates.
• IT skills particular to the greenkeeping industry
• A keen interest in the game of golf.

Additional Information:

This is a “hands-on” position, and the successful candidate will need to demonstrate a proven track record of high standard golf course presentation. An attractive salary package commensurate with experience and in line with BIGGA guidelines will be negotiated.

The Future Turf Managers Initiative 2018, made possible by Jacobsen, a Textron Golf brand, will take place at the company’s HQ in Ipswich from 6-8 March 2018.

Aimed at up and coming greenkeepers who want to make the leap to Course Manager, FTMI focuses on personal and professional development. The FTMI programme utilises the expertise of leading Course Managers, dynamic trainers and industry experts to mentor and educate the next generation of industry leaders.

Sami Strutt, Head of Member Development at BIGGA said: “We saw an increase of almost 40% in the number of applications received for FTMI 2018. Every year the selection process gets more difficult due to high quality applicants.

Seasonal Assistant Greenkeepers

We are currently looking for experienced Assistant Greenkeepers for the upcoming summer season here in Norway. The contract lengths will be 5-7 months from April onwards.

Miklagard Golf is widely regarded as Norway’s top golf course. The location of the 18-hole course is 30 minutes north of Oslo City Centre and conveniently only a 10 minute drive from Oslo International airport (Gardermoen). Designed by Robert Trent Jones Jnr, the course is 6,765 meters long and is described as a links parkland course.

The seasonal staff will be asked to work within a team, of which we place great responsibility on, to maintain the course to the highest possible standard. This is also a great opportunity learn new and alternative skills you wouldn’t use on a course in the UK.

The correct candidates should have the following:

• Experience working on a golf course (1-year minimum)
• A qualification in Green keeping (NVQ 2/ SVQ 2 or currently in the process)
• Experience using cutting machinery
• Experience with course set up / Tournament preparation
• Basic on site accommodation is supplied by the golf club at a monthly fee.

Assistant Course Manager

Established in 1905 in the Giffnock suburb of Glasgow, Whitecraigs is a classic parkland course situated on the Netherton estate with easy access to the City and surrounding areas. The course is surrounded by beautiful parkland, rolling fairways and smoothly surfaced greens offer a unique golfing challenge. The course continues to provide a truly wonderful golfing experience for all levels of golfer.

The post involves operating as Deputy to the Course Manager at any time during which he is unavailable, including the supervision of greens staff and the full responsibility for course maintenance. The successful candidate will be dynamic and self -motivated with the ability to lead and manage a team of greenkeepers (plus part-time and specialist sub- contractors when required). Good communication skills, flexible approach to working hours and extended working are essential. Previous experience in this role is essential; applicants should be able to demonstrate a full knowledge of green-keeping skills and commensurate with the expectations of the members of The Whitecraigs Golf Club.

• SVQ Level 3 in Green-keeping or equivalent
• PA1, 2 and 6 spraying certificates
• Machinery maintenance an advantage
• Knowledge of Health & Safety relating to golf course operations
• CS 30 and 31 chainsaw certificates
• Tree Felling experience
• Experience using 360 degree Excavator
• First aid qualification and defibrillator training
• UK Driving Licence

The position is based on a 37.5-hour week (weekends paid as overtime as per the rota), flexibility is essential, particularly over the summer months and preparing for competitions. This is an excellent opportunity for the right person to work closely with an experienced team and further their skills and training.

• Flexibility in working hours

• Good communication skills
• Willing and enthusiastic to work as part of a team
• Experience on all aspects of modern golf course maintenance machinery
• Ideally been through the Ohio state program
• Hold a valid driver’s licence

Please Note: An apprenticeship application would be considered for this role
