Another clean sweep for BIGGA members at Golf Environment Awards

The winners of the 2018 Golf Environment Awards were announced at The Crown, Harrogate, in a ceremony hosted by STRI Group and the R&A.

Conservation Greenkeeper of the Year 2018 ??“ Stephen Thompson (John O’Gaunt Golf Club)

Outstanding Environmental Project of the Year 2018 ??“ Abergele Golf Club

STRI ecology consultant, Sophie Vukelic, said: “A huge congratulations to the winners and finalists of this year’s awards, you each showcase what sustainable management is within golf. The golf environment is a better place with you all working to protect it”

The annual Golf Environment Awards provide the platform from which the golf industry can demonstrate environmental excellence in all its forms. Established in 1995, the awards have gone from strength to strength and in 2018, attendees to the awards almost tripled in numbers.

Carnoustie Golf Links were awarded Environmental Golf Course of the Year for their incredible work within the local community and their continued environmentally conscious practices in all areas of golf course management. Each decision at the golf facility considers the impact on the environment and each member of staff is trained to work in such a way.

Stephen has extensive biodiversity records for both courses at his club, enabling him to tailor the management of the mosaic of habitats accordingly.

Not only did this Operation Pollinator project provide for nectar and pollen loving insects, it also provided a great golf education to the younger generation.

STRI is indebted to lead partner, The R&A, and the sponsors - Ransomes Jacobson, Aquatrols, Syngenta, Tillers Turf and Wiedenmann and would like to thank them for their continued support. The R&A’s involvement in the GEA Awards does not elicit its endorsement for the sponsor’s products or services.

BTME 2018 signs off with innovation, excitement and evolution

Three days of exhibitions, across four halls at the Harrogate Convention Centre, and more than 3,000 individual education experiences during Continue to Learn, combined to make BTME 2018 a huge success.

From the opening of the education programme on Sunday, right through until the show’s closing on Thursday, BTME was filled with non-stop action and events.

From innovative new seminars and workshops right through to the latest product launches from exhibitors, the Harrogate Convention Centre was once again transformed as BTME reaffirmed its position as the premier turf management exhibition in Europe.

BIGGA Chief Executive Jim Croxton said: “We’ve had a great few days with record numbers in the education. It’s been really buzzing in the seminars and workshops. Out in the halls the last few days have been absolutely packed, too full in fact, and there has probably not been quite enough room for everyone, but there’s been great feedback so far.”

And it wasn’t just visitors from the UK who visited BTME, but delegates from all over the world. Among those were the TurfNet delegation, with a record 16 American course superintendents joining the trip, and world-class speakers such as Micah Woods, of the Asian Turfgrass Center.

Adam Butler of Baroness UK commented on the international flavour to the entire event. He said: “We’ve had a great few days at BTME 2018. It’s great to see so many people from the UK visit us, but also our international customers. We’ve had people from Austria, Sweden, Denmark, Luxembourg, so it’s really good to see them and we’re looking forward to next year already.”

Other highlights of the week included the BTME Breakfast Club: Cutting Edge Turf Management, the first-ever Young Greenkeepers Conference, and the BIGGA Welcome Celebration, which continues to grow in popularity and saw the crowning of the BIGGA Awards winners.

Alistair said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have won, I certainly never expected this! I’m from a small village of around 300 people, we rely mainly on tourists, and I do have a good relationship with my club. As a small community you get to know everyone at the club, as they’re all friends, family, neighbours, and I’m delighted to have been able to represent them on such a massive scale.”

All eyes now turn to BTME 2019, which will see the exhibition evolve into a new form, with new halls being utilised that will allow the exhibition to expand further than ever before.

Jim added: “For next year I’m really looking forward to the fact that we are going to improve the visitor experience. It’s going to be more pleasant, people are going to stay longer around the halls, take a break, get some food and drink, see some innovations and have a look at some of the things we offer our members as well.”

You can read more about all the announcements, awards winners and other fantastic events that took place at BTME 2018 in the February edition of Greenkeeper International.

We’d love to hear your feedback and your experiences from BTME 2018. Get in touch on social media at @BIGGALtd and by using #BTME2018.

See you all back in Harrogate in 2019!

Blec 'bounces back' at BTME

BTME 2018 saw BLEC bouncing back and looking bright under the stewardship of Charterhouse Turf Machinery.

The range of specialised landscaping and turfcare equipment has been streamlined and re-engineered by the Redexim team to feature a wealth of features. Manager of the BLEC division, Curtis Allen, will be ‘on-stand’ to happily explain what 18 months of hard work at Redexim has achieved.

In line with demand, the BLEC range has been rationalised to a number of core machines which sit happily alongside, as well as expanding, the current offering from Charterhouse in the UK. Additionally, each of the models in the new BLEC portfolio have been refined and further developed thanks to Redexim’s manufacturing techniques to ensure maximum suitability and efficiency for the market.

One such example of product development is the BLEC Turfmaker, a seeder which uses front castellated rollers to crush lumps whilst producing small pockets to accept the seed. The rear set of rollers than split the shallow ridge formed by the front roller, incorporating the seed evenly in the top 12mm, whilst keeping surface disturbance to a minimum. The Turfmaker has now been updated to include a new seed control rate system, new seed feed mechanism and weight ballast kits, all alongside a new look.

With the machinery developments complete, Charterhouse have also been busy appointing dealers to distribute the range. The wide variety of applications BLEC machines can satisfy requires a new network of dealers, and there has been a great deal of interest ??“ the one criteria being a name renowned for quality and service.

The first new BLEC dealer has been confirmed as Acorn Tractors. Based in Derbyshire, Acorn Tractors stock tractors, mowers and other turfcare equipment from a range of established industry manufacturers. Acorn Tractors Owner Julian Simpson says, “We are delighted to have been appointed as BLEC dealers for the Central UK region. We have been involved with BLEC products for many years, both from using the machinery on contracting projects to selling as well. We look forward to offering BLEC machines for purchase or hire to new & existing customers.”

The Young Greenkeepers Committee held its first national conference

The first-ever Young Greenkeepers Conference brought together some of the brightest developing talent in the industry.

YGC Chairman Tom Smith was blown away by the reaction to the conference.

“It’s been absolutely amazing,” said Tom. “We’ve been working on this for the last year and to have more than 70 people here on our first go is fantastic.”

Aside from invaluable networking opportunities, the conference provided educational seminars on topics ranging from social media to career progression to turf management.

“Having the likes of James Bledge [course manager at Royal Cinque Ports] inspiring people here is great,” he said. “If they take anything away it’s seeing guys like that who’ve been in their position and gone on to be a course manager.”

“It’s bringing a lot of greenkeepers together from all over the country,” said Bill. “I bumped into someone who I met at The Open and then with the likes of Twitter, it’s a way of connecting with people you don’t see on a regular basis and you get to put some faces to names.

"The networking side of things is genuinely brilliant. It’s been very good speaking with some people you might only see on social media, and now you get to speak to them in person.
"I’ve been very impressed with how far the Young Greenkeepers Committee has come along to now have its first national conference.
"It helps with education and development as well. It shows how many more qualifications are out there that you might not have known about before.”

The BTME Breakfast Club kicks day two of BTME off in style

Four of the turf management industry’s leading names came together on Wednesday to share stories from their stellar careers and discuss the issues they’ve faced.

Kenny Mackay, Darren Baldwin, Stuart Kerrison and Keith Kent spoke at BTME 2018 about their roles at Wentworth, Tottenham Hotspur, Essex Cricket Club and the Rugby Football Union.

Kenny and his team at Wentworth won the BIGGA Championship Performance of the Year Award for turning the course around between the 2016 and 2017 BMW PGA Championships.

“The team is everything in this,” he said. “It is in all the sports industry. You talk to the guys right through the team who really make a difference, it doesn’t matter who you are, you aren’t going to deliver that without the right people alongside you.”

Darren Baldwin is head groundsman at Tottenham Hotspur and is currently working on one of the most fascinating projects in the industry.

The innovative design for Tottenham’s new stadium will feature an NFL pitch underneath its primary football pitch, which will slide away into a garage before being rolled out for Tottenham fixtures.

“They’re two different playing surfaces,” said Darren. “We have a deal with the NFL to host two games per season for the next 10 years.

"But the damage these guys do to a playing surface is unbelievable, so the chairman had a vision to slide the pitch out, under one of the new stands and underneath will be the NFL pitch. His drive to achieve the best both on and off the pitch is second to none.”

While much of BTME is exhibitors showcasing how best to grow grass, for Stuart Kerrison the opposite is true.

As head groundsman at Essex Cricket, he told of how his job revolves more around killing grass than growing it.

“People say that we’re trying to kill the grass and there’s a lot of truth in it,” he said.

“We spend half the season trying to destroy the grass. We’re starving it of moisture, we’re putting three-tonne rollers on it 20 or 30 times. And then you’ve got 16-stone blokes with spikes on their boots trampling all over it.

"We’re having to work within massive budget restraints but the demands are much the same. Cricket’s king in India. We can have a cricket game with 5,000 people in the ground and 25,000 watching on TV and half a billion watching in India, so there’s still the same pressure.”

Keith Kent has worked at Manchester United and Leicester City and is now overseeing things with the Rugby Football Union at Twickenham.

Despite spending more than 30 years in football, Keith said he found the transition to rugby to be quite straightforward.

He said: “It was quite easy because the wear patches are different. There’s a bit of a diamond shape in football but it’s chaos in rugby.

"You can have a scrum or maul anywhere on the pitch and there’s 15-a-side rather than 11, but most of all I enjoyed the switch, because I don’t understand the game, so I enjoy it.

"We’re trying to catch up with football. With rugby there’s so much compaction so aeration is key. At Twickenham we want to have the best pitch in the world. We can’t be old-fashioned groundsmen saying ‘You can’t play on our pitch’ so we have to find ways to improve.”

Bernhard announce new partnership with MLR

Bernhard and Company have announced a new partnership with Norwegian supplementary lighting business, MLR, promising to deliver their products to “all four corners of the globe”.

The long-term deal will see Bernhard and Company used as MLR’s global distributor for its complete range of products.

The lighting company, founded in 1998, are already well established within a variety of sports, working with Premier League football club Brighton and Hove Albion, and a number of top European football clubs in Monaco, Kiev and Copenhagen.

Director for Bernhard, Steven Nixon, explained that they plan to use their connections to grow MLR within the golf industry.

He said: “This is the perfect partnership for Bernhard and we are delighted with it.

"We’re looking for niche products all the time. It’s an expansion from Subair, TurfBreeze and other technology that’s a little bit different and fits with the same philosophy. For us it’s brand new and we’re excited about learning about it and developing it.

"Plant health is at the very heart of our business, it complements and enhances the products we already offer.

"The partnership makes perfect sense. Together we are taking care of the most common issues to groundsmen and greenkeepers - too much water, too little air, not enough light and unhealthy turf. In effect, we now control all the elements that the plans needs for healthy growth.”

MLR general manager, Hermann Sather, said: “I’m delighted to start this relationship with Bernhard. Its business is renowned throughout the turf industry and is a perfect fit to help us deliver our products across the globe.”

Bayer 'Tech-Talks' an exhibition first

‘Life after Iprodione’ is a major focus at BTME for the Bayer Turf Solutions Team, who have been running a series of 'Tech-Talks on stand A46, to explain what the future of turf pest and disease management will look like as the industry loses chemistry.

Dr Colin Mumford is also giving a dedicated seminar on Wednesday 24 January at 10am in the Queen’s Suite.

Iprodione, the active ingredient in Chipco Green and Interface, was officially withdrawn from the market in November 2017. The sale of the product is permitted until March 2018, and greenkeepers then have a further three months to 5 June 2018 to use up all stocks.

Neil Pettican, Bayer head of sales for turf and amenity, explained that although a valuable ingredient is leaving the market, innovation is ongoing, and the organisation is working hard to develop new products, both now and into the future.

He said: “We introduced Exteris Stressguard to the UK market in January 2017. Not only was this a new active ingredient, but a whole new chemical group, aiding resistance management.

"With the loss of products, the message is clear: the future of disease control is preventative, not curative, and greenkeepers need to change their approach, with resistance management being key to this strategy.

"So, the tech talks are a great 'bite-size’ learning opportunity to explain some of the technical terms with an interactive approach.

As take-home references, the new Microdochium Patch guide will be available to pick up free of charge, and the updated TurfXpert App, which is free to download, will be at the show.

Deeside bounces back from flooding devastation with BIGGA Awards success

The greenkeeping team at Deeside Golf Club in Aberdeenshire is celebrating after being crowned BIGGA Awards winners at BTME 2018.

Led by Course Manager Neil McLoughlin (41), the greenkeeping team were announced as the winner of the BIGGA Greenkeeping Achievement of the Year Award sponsored by Baroness, at a ceremony held this evening in the Harrogate Convention Centre’s Royal Hall.

When Storm Frank hit Aberdeenshire the day before New Year’s Eve in 2015, it caused the River Dee to reach record levels, three times covering the course in a thick layer of silt and debris.

In the aftermath, the team was able to get 10 holes reopened after just 77 days and the clean-up saw over six tonnes of grass seed laid down, 10,000m2 of turf laid and all 98 bunkers rebuilt, using 3,000 tonnes of sand for topdressing and bunkers.

During 2017 the hard work continued, with the silt layer impeding drainage. Over 400m of drainage was installed and a programme of scarification and topdressing helped break down the silt layer further.

The Deeside team was presented with the award by television presenter and #ThisGirlGolfs ambassador Naga Munchetty at the BIGGA Welcome Celebration sponsored by Textron Golf. The awards ceremony is one of the highlights of BTME 2018, the premier turf management exhibition in Europe.

Neil said: “It’s a real honour to win this award. Storm Frank came in and devastated the whole Dee Valley and the golf course ended in a hell of a state.

"We do flood quite a lot, but generally we call them clean floods - the water comes in and goes out but that year the Dee rose to a record level and brought so much of the soil and everything else with it and deposited it on the golf course.

"Without these guys we wouldn’t have got the golf course back open so quickly so hats off to all of them. It’s been nice to bring all these guys down with me.”

BIGGA Chief Executive Jim Croxton said: “Of the golf clubs who were hit hard by the devastation that Storm Frank wrought in December 2015, it was perhaps Deeside who were hit hardest of all.

“For greenkeepers who dedicate their lives to maintaining a relatively small patch of land, the damage must have been heartbreaking. It is therefore to Neil and his team’s immense credit that they were able to pick themselves up and restore the course to its former glory.

“I cannot praise the greenkeeping team highly enough for the work they have done to get Deeside back on its feet. They are truly an inspiration to greenkeepers all over the country and they are worthy recipients of this year’s BIGGA Greenkeeping Achievement of the Year Award sponsored by Baroness.”

The other finalists for the BIGGA Greenkeeping Achievement of the Year Award sponsored by Baroness were Andrew Brougham, head greenkeeper of Astbury Golf Club, and Stuart Imeson, course manager at Dunstanburgh Castle Golf Club.

BTME 2018 runs until Thursday 25 January and features more than 150 exhibitors from all aspects of the turf management industry. Each year more than 4,500 greenkeepers, trade members, club managers and other representatives of the golfing industry come together to network and share news of the latest education and innovation.

Headland Amenity discusses innovations in the light of chemical withdrawals

When the announcement came that a number of fungicides were to be banned in 2017 and 2018, it forced greenkeepers to use new measures when it comes to disease management.

Last year Tebuconazole and Prochloraz were banned, with Iprodione set to be prohibited this summer, effectively ending the option of reactive fungicide applications.

Headland Amenity have continued to develop their “20-20-30” non-pesticidal tankmix, which contains 30 litres of Seamac ProTurf Fe, 20 litres of Liquid Turf Hardener plant protectants and 20 litres of Turfite elicitor.

Andy Russell of Headland Amenity warns that prevention is becoming evermore important than the cure, explaining that they have continued to develop and refine their mix as a solution.

He said: “For 11 years we’ve been working on the 20-20-30 mix and established it does a good job, but what we’re doing is looking for things we can add to that to improve the efficacy and get an even better result.

"After Iprodione is banned it’s going to be very difficult to deal with established disease outbreaks. The focus has to be on prevention and on minimising disease in the first instance before you get it.”

Andy sympathised with greenkeepers who’ve been affected by the change in legislation, and felt it’s been a particularly tough couple of years for greenkeepers who have had to turn to alternative methods of turf management.

He said: “We knew this was coming. This message has been communicated over the last couple of years. So the next few months is the run down of the chemical, then it will stop and hopefully now people understand we’ll have to go to more preventative measures.

"Especially in this last 18-24 months, people have wanted to try different preventative measures because they knew we would be in this position, and that coincided with a particularly high disease period.”

Headland have been attending BTME for more than two decades, and Andy illustrated the role the exhibition plays in their business.

“It’s important in the respect that it gives us an opportunity to see a lot of customers in a short period of time,” he said.

“We also get to spend some time with them and it’s a chance for them to see the new products on the market. It’s important for our guys to understand what’s happening the market. There are a number of real positives to coming.”

'Most north-westerly' greenkeeper gets BIGGA award

Talented young greenkeeper Alistair Morrison is celebrating after winning a BIGGA Award at BTME 2018.

Alistair (25) is head greenkeeper at Durness Golf Club and was announced as the winner of the BIGGA Young Greenkeeper of the Year Award sponsored by Textron Golf at an awards ceremony held this evening.

Alistair began his career as an apprentice at Brora, before moving back to his hometown club at Durness. As the only member of the greenkeeping team at the most north-westerly course on mainland Britain, the role requires a huge amount of dedication and commitment to personal development and the development of the course.

During his three years at Brora, Alistair volunteered at three European Tour events, including the European Masters in Switzerland.

Alistair’s award was announced by television presenter and #ThisGirlGolfs ambassador Naga Munchetty at the BIGGA Welcome Celebration sponsored by Textron Golf. He was presented with his award by Andre Andrade, director of international sales at Textron Golf. The awards ceremony is one of the highlights of BTME 2018, the premier turf management exhibition in Europe.

Alistair said: “I’m absolutely delighted to have won, I certainly never expected this! From a small village of around 300 people we rely mainly on tourists, and I do have a good relationship with club. As a small club you know everyone, they’re all friends, family, neighbours, and I’m delighted to be have able to be able to represent them on such a massive scale.”

BIGGA Chief Executive Jim Croxton said: “I’m delighted that we have been able to recognise the efforts of Alistair, who has achieved professional and personal development despite the challenges faced of preparing a course in tough economic time. The fact Alistair is able to prepare a thriving course for his golfers, despite working on his own and in such a remote location, is no mean feat and he is an inspiration to us all.”

The other finalists of the award were Angus Roberts of Roxburghe Hotel & Golf Club and Carl Sharp of Royal Mid-Surrey Golf Club.

Jim added: “Congratulations must also go to Angus and Carl who did incredibly well to reach the finals of the awards. With such outstanding candidates, it’s great to see that the future of greenkeeping is in safe hands.”

BTME 2018 runs until Thursday 25 January and features more than 150 exhibitors from all aspects of the turf management industry. John Deere renews partnership with LET

Ladies European Tour chairman Mark Lichtenhein attended the opening day of BTME 2018 to announce John Deere would remain the Tour’s official supplier of golf course maintenance equipment.

LET tournaments, including the Solheim Cup at Gleneagles in September 2019, will be supported by John Deere equipment through the company’s European golf dealer network.
The announcement was made by Mark on the John Deere stand at BTME 2018 on Tuesday 23 January.
He said: “We are delighted that John Deere has decided to extend its relationship with the Ladies European Tour for the next two years, beyond the 2019 Solheim Cup at Gleneagles. This is a testament to our enduring partnership since 2006 and demonstrates the alignment of our brands and our joint objective to ensure a bright future for the women’s game.”
John Deere officials will also continue to work closely with the LET’s agronomists, with the goal of helping to produce better quality playing surfaces across the continent.
Carlos Aragones, European turf sales and marketing manager for John Deere, said: “We are also delighted that what has already proved to be a fruitful relationship with the Ladies European Tour is continuing to grow. The strength of the John Deere brand is based on the quality of our products and customer service, and we are very proud to be associated with both the LET and the Solheim Cup.

Amenity spray operator of the year winner announced at BTME 2018

The prestigious title of Amenity Sprayer Operator of the Year has been won by Nathan Hume, contracts manager and ecologist for national grounds maintenance experts, SH Goss Ltd.

ASOY rewards top sprayer operators across the amenity industry, with the aim to share their best practices to enhance standards for all.

Nathan primarily specialises in the prevention of invasive non-native plants. He operates in a wide variety of sites including airports, railways, cemeteries, rivers, forests, nature reserves, construction sites and golf courses.

“It was an honour to receive the award,” he said. “Myself and the company have always followed best practice so it’s a nice justification that we are doing things right.”

Presented for the first time at BTME Harrogate this week, the ASOY Awards are organised by the Amenity Forum, and sponsored by ICL and Syngenta, in association with BASIS.

As well as the overall top operator, Nathan Hume was the winner of the Landscape & Industrial using hand held equipment category.

Also recognised by the Awards were Chris Phillips of Complete Weed Control South Wales, as the top operator for Sports turf using boom sprayer or hand held equipment, along with the company’s Lee Harrison, winner of the Landscape & Industrial using vehicle mounted equipment category.

Commenting on Nathan’s success, from a record entry in the third annual ASOY Awards, Professor John Moverley, Chairman of the Amenity Forum, said: ‘‘The awards seek to recognise the quality and level of professionalism in our sector. They highlight how professional amenity maintenance keeps Britain moving.

“All of the category winners have demonstrated an extremely high level of professionalism, and picking an overall winner was extremely difficult,” he reported. “They have all demonstrated the exceptional skills of operators across the amenity sector - doing their jobs to an extremely high standard every day.

“Secondly, they have exemplified the whole concept of the safe use of pesticides, being applied correctly and in a sustainable manner.”

ICL Landscape and Industrial Manager Mark Pyrah added: “Accurate application, ably demonstrated by the skills of all the ASOY entrants, is a key element of effective stewardship of products and helping to ensure they will remain available.

“It is all about sprayer awareness - maintaining good application to maintain the product so that the individual is promoting best practice.”

Daniel Lightfoot, Syngenta Turf UK Business Manager, believes the awards should be a shining light of the amenity industry’s approach to safe and sustainable spray application.

“The independent judging panel highlighted Nathan has shown outstanding skills and worked to very high standards to achieve the best possible results,“ he said. "He has proved a worthy winner by showing that best practice can deliver efficient, cost effective and, above all, safe amenity spraying.

“Syngenta recognises that the skills of the sprayer operator are paramount in achieving the full potential from all applications and assuring the future sustainable use.”

Former Wentworth head man takes on BIGGA presidency

The former courses and estates manager at The Wentworth Club, who worked closely with Ernie Els during the four-time Major winner’s renovation of the West Course, has been announced as President of BIGGA for 2018.

Chris Kennedy, who retired from his role at Wentworth in 2012, succeeded Sid Arrowsmith MG as BIGGA President and was appointed at the BIGGA AGM, held on Tuesday 23 January at the Harrogate Convention Centre during BTME 2018.

Chris said: “I would like to thank Sid for all his hard work over the past two years, as Vice President and then president of BIGGA. I have enjoyed being able to spend time with him over the past year and he’s one of the great characters of the greenkeeping industry. It’s been a real privilege and I am looking forward to taking on this role and representing this fantastic association as best as I am able.”

In a greenkeeping career spanning more than half a century, Chris secured one of the most coveted jobs in golf when he joined Wentworth in February 1990.

Chris began his career at Cowglen, before moving to Haggs Castle, where he spent 20 years. During his time there he oversaw the 1972 reconstruction of the course under the direction of Dave Thomas and Peter Alliss, which led to his being chosen by Wentworth, where the South Course was being constructed.

During his time at Wentworth, Chris oversaw 56 European Tour events. He retired from the courses and estates managers role at Wentworth in May 2012 following his final tournament, the BMW PGA Championship, won by Luke Donald, and with his good friend Ernie Els coming in seventh.

Former BIGGA President Sid Arrowsmith MG said: The main joy of the year has simply been meeting fellow greenkeepers, discussing their issues and their problems and the way they’re going to go about solving them. That’s been the most enjoyable part. I would have to give BIGGA a big round of applause for the work they’re doing. They’ve been working in the background making sure we’re equipped with education and training in order to take on the big responsibilities we’re tasked with in this job.

Wentworth greenkeeping team receives BIGGA Award

The greenkeeping team at The Wentworth Club in Virginia Water has been recognised for its incredible performance in preparing the course for the BMW PGA Championship 2017 with the BIGGA Championship Performance of the Year Award sponsored by Rigby Taylor.

The redesign of Wentworth’s famous West Course was conducted by European Tour Golf Design, with the support of Ryder Cup captains Paul McGinley and Thomas Bjorn and the Ernie Els Design group. But it was Director of Estates and Golf Courses Kenny Mackay and his team who were responsible for ensuring the changes were implemented ahead of the BMW PGA Championship in May 2017.

All 18 greens were stripped of the old turf and re-seeded with a new creeping bent, while four greens ??“ on the eighth, 11th, 14th and 16th holes ??“ were completely rebuilt. A sub-air system was also installed on all the greens, while new drainage and irrigation was introduced.

Furthermore, all the bunkers were redesigned and reconstructed, with 29 completely removed from play.

European Tour Chief Executive Keith Pelley said: “The greens are spectacular and aesthetically the golf course is considerably stronger. Stephen Gallacher was walking by and he said, ‘The golf course has significantly improved. It’s just absolutely fantastic and the greens are great’.”

Kenny accepted the award at the BIGGA Welcome Celebration sponsored by Textron Golf, held this evening in the Harrogate Convention Centre’s Royal Hall. The awards ceremony is one of the highlights of BTME 2018, the premier turf management exhibition in Europe.

Kenny said: “It’s a very close-knit team. The big challenge we’ve seen is preparing the greens from tournament.

"When the new owners came in we knew we had a plan together. There was a lot of work behind the scenes and all that research came off. It’s two years in the making to get to here.”

BIGGA Chief Executive Officer Jim Croxton said: “This was nothing short of a superhuman effort by the team at The Wentworth Club, who worked non-stop from the moment the 2016 BMW PGA Championship ended until the 2017 event began to ensure the course matched up to the incredible standards required when hosting the European Tour’s flagship championship.

“Well done to Kenny and to all his team on this spectacular achievement, and on being crowned winners of the Championship Greenkeeping Performance of the Year at BTME 2018.

“Congratulations also to the Dundonald Links and Moor Allerton teams, who were both worthy finalists after hosting exceptional tournaments during 2017. All are a credit to BIGGA and the greenkeeping industry as a whole.”

BTME 2018 runs until Thursday 25 January and features more than 150 exhibitors from all aspects of the turf management industry. Each year more than 4,500 greenkeepers, trade members, club managers and other representatives of the golfing industry come together to network and share news of the latest education and innovation.

BTME 2018: Continue to Learn kicks into high gear

The Continue to Learn kicked into high gear on Monday, as the second day of education saw more than 400 delegates take part in the world-class career development programme.

With events divided between the Queen’s Suite in the Harrogate Convention Centre and the Majestic Hotel, there was a wide range of seminars and workshops on offer for BIGGA members at all stages of their careers.

Jeremy Marchant, specialist in emotional intelligence, was speaking at Continue to Learn for the first time. He said he was surprised at how interested BIGGA members were in a topic that wasn’t directly greenkeeping-related, and how ready they were to embrace new ideas.

He added: “I was nicely surprised by the degree of interest, just watching people’s body language as I was talking. There was a lot of interest, and I was primed for that because people told me how much the members of BIGGA are interested in their personal development and how much they’re ready and willing to find out new stuff. It was a really rewarding experience to see that degree of interest.”

The Turf Managers’ Conference, held in the Majestic Hotel, was compered by BBC Radio Leeds sports editor and former BIGGA employee Gareth Jones, who enjoyed his reintroduction to the world of greenkeeping.

“I was really excited to come back, when Sami asked me to be involved,” said Gareth. “Seeing the amount of work that goes into BTME and into the education over the next couple of days. It was always one of my most favourite times of the year, and coming back I got that buzz again. It has reminded me just how important this event is to the whole industry.”

The first day of Continue to Learn on Sunday saw 207 delegates brave the snowy conditions to take part in the education programme.

Continue to Learn at BTME is the largest single education programme for the turf management industry outside of the United States, and is a major feature of the overall exhibition.

Continue to Learn runs until Wednesday 24 January and features more than 250 hours of education.

Although bookings have closed now the show is underway, there are a host of other events taking place at BTME 2018 that are free of charge to those attending BTME. Among them is the BTME Breakfast Club: Cutting Edge Turf Management, and the BIGGA Welcome Celebration sponsored by Textron Golf.
