Seminar 15 - Turfgrass Disease - Alternative Means of Suppression

Date: 24th January 2018

Disease control is a major factor in successfully managing turfgrasses, there is however, a dependency on fungicides. Turf managers are increasingly becoming interested in alternative methods to control disease. This seminar will present and assess alternative methods of control. Data will be presented showing the latest research methodologies for disease control, it will present data explaining how non-fungicidal controls such as Fe and rolling work. Furthermore, explain how suppression by natural compounds such as silica, potassium, manganese, and phosphite occurs. The eficacy of biological controls e.g. compost tea, will be assessed and finally methods which enhance the plants natural defense systems are presented.

Learning Outcomes:

  • Describe common cool-season turfgrass pathogens and the current control methods
  • Understand the infection process of common turf grass pathogens
  • Understand how a range of natural compounds can suppress disease
  • Describe the effects of rolling on disease incidence
  • Have an understanding of the responses turfgrass has to pathogen challenge and how these can be primed or enhanced by a range of natural compounds

Presented by Dr John Dempsey, Superintendent/Plant Pathologist, Royal Currah Golf Club
