With the European Tour’s flagship event taking place at your course each spring, the pressure is always on for Kenny Mackay and his team at Wentworth. This was increased furthermore during 2017 as the new-look West Course was unveiled following a multi-million pound overhaul.
Are you looking forward to BTME?
“Being a board member and being part of the board for the past 10 years, BIGGA means a lot to me. As a member and a past chairman of the association, I’m a huge support or BTME. It gives a great opportunity for everyone to get together in the town. Harrogate makes it special because the entire town is filled with guys who you meet and catch up with.
What do you enjoy about speaking at conferences?
“It’s not my strong point, but I don’t mind doing sessions because it’s about getting the greenkeeping side of the story out there so that people are aware that there’s a vast difference among groundsmen, from the big clubs to those on a local level.
What is the value of education?
“That’s what they are really coming for. We are looking at the guys that want to progress in the team and want to get some more education. We offer the chance to come to BTME out to our team and we get a sense of who wants to learn.
“It helps identify the guys who are wanting to move forward in the careers and really continue to develop. Education is everything.
What is the value of cross-sport education?
“The stadium staff have led the way in a lot of things such as the artificial fibres, such as they have on a football pitch. We want to explore the potential in the golf world. Lighting rigs is another possibility ??“ they have the infrastructure to make it work easily and golf is moving towards that market. They can take something off us and we can take something off them, which I think is really important.
